A substantial permanent endowment capable of generating interest revenue sufficient to fund numerous academic scholarships for top-performing entering students is the ambitious goal of the Archbishop Shaw High School Alumni Association, Inc. 501(c)(3) Endowment Fund. The Alumni Association Endowment, which is a fund maintained separately from the school’s own endowment, currently has a balance of about one quarter of a million dollars.
The Alumni Association endowment was started several years ago with seed money from a few donors and proceeds from alumni activities and fund-raisers. Its principal source of deposits has been the Alumni Association’s annual $10,000 raffle. Last year, the endowment experienced about a 20% increase, including gifts of $20,000 and accumulating interest of more than $7,000. Contributions to the Alumni Association Endowment flow through a separate component of the Association’s account at the Homebank Manhattan Boulevard branch in Harvey for ultimate investment in and through the Greater New Orleans Foundation.
According to its Mission Statement, the Greater New Orleans Foundation for almost 100 years has assisted non-profit organizations like the Archbishop Shaw Alumni Association by “connecting generous people to the causes that spark their passion. As one of the most trusted philanthropic organizations in the region, we work every day” to help non-profit organizations “drive positive impact through philanthropy, leadership and action.”
The ultimate goal of the Alumni Association Endowment is to generate sufficient interest income annually to fund scholarships and attract the top performing students on an academic basis to Archbishop Shaw High School from its feeder Catholic grammar schools, including but not limited to St. Rosalie, Visitation of Our Lady, Our Lady of Perpetual Help, St. Cletus, St. Anthony, St. Andrew, Immaculate Conception, Our Lady of Prompt Succor and St. Charles Borromeo Schools and former students of Christ the King School.
